FAQ

Description

The BJFE Dyna Red Distortion (DRD) is a dynamic, harmonic, and Plexi-style distortion pedal released on May 9, 2001. The DRD can produce a range of tones from crunchy low-gain to heavy, crunchy sounds with a clean amp. When the Drive knob is set to the left of 12 o'clock, it provides a dynamic distortion where the distortion can be adjusted by picking, while setting it higher than 12 o'clock provides a full distortion with a stronger distortion always available.

Using the DRD with a clean amp in particular makes it easy to adjust the distortion to your liking. Placing the LGW before it results in a comfortable playing experience and a clear sound. It's especially ideal for Vox-style amps. Besides the LGW, it also pairs perfectly with the EGDM and HBOD.

Also, while the DRD works well with distorted amplifiers, depending on the amplifier's characteristics and settings, it may sometimes produce a slightly harsher, more crunchy sound. So, try experimenting with the DRD and amplifier settings to find the sweet spot.

The earliest DRDs were called Fuzz 2 (Fuzz 1 was the BBOD). In fact, the DRD is the big bad brother of the BBOD. It is a 100% original design, handmade, and made with the finest components. It is true bypass and each one is individually tuned. Every unit has a wonderful tone. As mentioned above, it is designed to be used simultaneously with the BBOD, placed in front of it. Combining the BBOD and DRD gives you a wide tonal palette. You can go from sweet overdrive and crunchy distortion to the realm of fuzz. The DRD is more dynamic and has less compression than the BBOD, but with higher gain. The BBOD has stronger high-mids, while the DRD has stronger low-mids. The low end is stronger in the DRD, and the top end sounds completely different. The tone becomes more aggressive and crunchy. It is well suited to playing with a lot of dynamic picking.

If BBOD is Bruce's smooth, mystical mile, then DRD feels like driving down a highway to hell.

The early DRDs had a flat red color with a nitrocellulose lacquer finish, but from 2004 onwards, the color was changed to a three-dimensional oil-based finish. It was originally developed as a distortion pedal suitable for low-output humbucker and P-90 pickups.

Rare DRD models that were produced in the past include the Dynamic Orange Distortion, Doc Rock's Distortion, and a version equipped with a blue LED.

The DIST knob adjusts the intensity and sustain of the distortion. Setting it low results in a sensitive distortion that adds distortion when the strings are plucked hard, while setting it high increases compression, transforming the sound from touch-sensitive to a more stable tone.

However, the sound is clear and also features a long sustain. Setting this knob below 12 o'clock allows you to use it like a gain booster. This is useful for placing an overdrive pedal before the DRD, or for adjusting heavy distortion to a clean sound using the guitar's volume. Try starting the setting around 11 o'clock.

The Treble knob adjusts the high frequencies of the output signal. It is also effective for controlling the balance of the tone when the effect is ON or OFF. Because the DRD has a high treble response, if you have set your clean sound to be on the brighter side, turning down this knob will prevent the high frequencies from becoming too harsh when the effect is ON.

Conversely, setting it beyond 12 o'clock will enhance the brilliance of the tone. Try starting the setting from the 12 o'clock position.

The Vol. knob adjusts the volume balance between the effect ON and OFF. Start by setting it slightly below 12 o'clock, and then adjust the tone from there.

The DRD has a high input impedance to match guitar pickups, and the output is set to a maximum value of approximately 20K, suitable for guitar amplifiers, many effects pedals, and tape echoes.

The DRD operates on a 6F22 9V battery or a standard 2.1mm barrel-type center-negative DC 9V adapter. Current consumption is approximately 3.9mA (2.8mA when the effect is off). If the supply voltage drops to 6V, the tone will become muffled and the LED will dim. In that case, try replacing the battery or checking the connected adapter.
