The Les Paul Model, guitarist Les Paul's signature model released in 1952, underwent major specification changes in the early 1960s when his contract with the company expired. This led to the birth of the new Les Paul in 1961, a model that boldly departed from the traditional single cutaway and was later called the SG (Solid Guitar).
The Les Paul Custom, the top-of-the-line Les Paul model up until that point, also underwent a model change. While it retained the same luxurious features as before, such as a three-pickup configuration, ebony fingerboard, and gold parts, it received a bold change to a slim white body. Positioned as the top-of-the-line model at the time, it became a special instrument created for professionals. The following year, the contract with Les Paul ended, and the model name was changed to "SG," making the Les Paul SG Custom a rare model produced for an extremely short period of time.
This particular guitar was shipped around 1961. It boasts a solid sound and has been used extensively in recording studios, mainly in the UK.
【body】
The overall weight is approximately 3.3 kg. The body is made of mahogany. The white body color matches the gold and black parts for a luxurious look. The original swing-away pull sideway arm has been removed and replaced with an easier-to-use stop tailpiece. There is weather checking throughout, dents with paint peeling mainly near the sides, and dullness on the metal parts, but considering the age of the guitar, it is in relatively good condition. The control knobs and back panel set screws have been replaced.
【neck】
The neck is made of mahogany. The fingerboard is made of precious ebony. The headtop boasts custom binding and double parallelogram inlays, typical of Gibson's top-of-the-line models. There is weather checking visible from the headstock to the back of the neck, touch-ups on the edges of the cell binding and areas of peeling paint, mainly on the right side of the first fret, and some tarnish on the metal parts, but like the body, it is in excellent condition. The tuners function well, although there is some variation in the tightness of the windings. The frets and nut have been replaced, and playability is excellent. The nut width is 43.0mm. The flat and wide neck shape is comfortable and comfortable to wear.
[Electrical system]
The controls are a 3-way pickup selector, 2 volumes, and 2 tones. The 3-way switch operates in the traditional Gibson style: neck (front), middle and bridge (rear), or bridge (rear). The bridge pickup is now a single pickup, connected in out-of-phase. The neck and middle pickups are slightly later stickered numbered humbuckers, while the bridge pickup is an original "PAF" pickup with a "PATENT APPLIED FOR" sticker. It features a fast attack, a solid midrange, and brilliant highs. The neck pickup produces a smooth, lustrous tone with a sweetness and depth that's ideal for jazz and blues. In the middle and bridge position, the out-of-phase pickup's distinctive nasal midrange and distinct harmonic range are prominent, producing a distinctive sound reminiscent of early 1960s British rock and studio work. The rear PAF has a wide range, and the sound image does not get crushed even when driven, and its attractive tone combines roughness and elegance, allowing you to fully experience the forward-thinking sound that rock guitarists of the time sought.
