The RAT, which first appeared in the late 1970s and remains a popular staple in the lineup to this day, is a large-case version from up until 1981, before the "TONE" control was replaced with a "FILTER" control. Based on the various dating marks, we believe it was made in 1981. While there is some rust and signs of use on the case, it is in fairly good condition considering its age.
The op-amp IC is the LM308N, the basic specification for the RAT, manufactured by National Semiconductor, reflecting the character of the era. The FET in the buffer circuit is also a National Semiconductor 2N5458. The "TONE" control has the opposite effect to the "FILTER" control. The RAT offers a wide range of tones, from piercing crunch tones to dynamic distortion with a fuzz flavor. Compared to small-box pedals, the drive has a somewhat boxy feel and a smooth texture. This rare large case with the "TONE" control label is a must-try.
