Released in 1974, the RE-201 is a legendary product beloved by musicians worldwide, creating a unique world with its rhythmic and warm echo sound. BOSS, with its deep understanding of the original, has recreated the sound and behavior of the RE-2, condensing the charm of the Space Echo that musicians find so pleasing.

The legendary Space Echo
Tape echo was the first effect pedal capable of producing an echo effect, and its warm, dynamic sound captivated many musicians. The Roland RE-201 Space Echo, born in 1974, differed from typical units with a single playback head by using three equally spaced playback heads to achieve a rhythmic echo. It also employed an innovative free-running system that minimized stress on the tape, resulting in high performance. It also included a built-in SPRING REVERB for an iconic sound, and these settings and controls were easily adjustable via front-panel knobs. Furthermore, the analog preamp section incorporated elements that enhanced the instrument's appeal, appealing to musicians with a strong focus on sound quality.

BOSS has meticulously re-analyzed the vast amount of data it has accumulated on Space Echo over many years, along with its own valuable mint-condition original unit and multiple vintage RE-201s. After carefully verifying the recording/playback mechanism and motor operation, the RE-2 has condensed the charm of Space Echo into a compact pedal enclosure. Just like the original, the combination of three playback heads and reverb can be easily selected with the MODE knob. The REPEAT RATE can be extended to twice the length of the original, making it fully appealing even in modern music. The WOW & FLUTTER knobs control the natural modulation effect that occurs when the rotation of the magnetic tape becomes unstable. Furthermore, these knobs reproduce the same behavior as the original, so even when obtaining oscillation sounds with extreme settings, you can control it in real time while feeling the raw movement of the mechanism as if you were touching the original. In addition, you can choose whether or not to pass the direct sound through the preamp. When passed through the preamp, you can get the warm direct sound unique to Space Echo. The RE-2 condenses the charm of Space Echo into a compact pedal. It is a model that is easy to add to your pedalboard.

Convenient features
The RE-2 is compact yet packed with convenient features. Pressing and holding the pedal allows you to control tap tempo and toggle the TWIST effect, which dramatically alters the echo. The stereo input allows for a wide, expansive reverb effect. A CARRY OVER ON/OFF switch is located on the top of the pedal, allowing you to easily configure whether or not the echo remains when the effect is turned off.

External extensions to broaden expression
The RE-2 is equipped with CTL1, CTL2/EXP expansion terminals. The built-in pedal allows for tap tempo input, and the added pedal switch allows you to turn TWIST ON/OFF. By connecting an expression pedal, you can control multiple parameters simultaneously. You can create the distinctive oscillation sound of the Space Echo while playing.
