~ Murphy Lab ~

Murphy Lab, a new lab located within the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, specializes in guitar aging (a process that replicates the aged appearance and playability of vintage guitars) using the latest technology based on scientific verification.

Tom Murphy, a founding member of the Gibson Custom Shop and project leader for the Historic Collection, has since made a name for himself with aging techniques that bring the look and feel of vintage guitars to new instruments. Backed by Tom's passion for vintage guitars and deep knowledge, his skills beautifully recreate the natural lacquer cracks and wear from playing on Gibson guitars.

Tom Murphy and Gibson scientifically analyzed the nitrocellulose lacquer used in 1950s and 1960s guitars, which develop cracks known as weather checking over time. They unraveled the process of this change and, through extensive testing with prototypes of various models, developed a lacquer process that reproduces the natural weather checking seen in vintage guitars.

Murphy Labs was conceived when Tom Murphy led the Gibson Custom Shop team in testing every body shape, finish, and aging level based on prototypes. As a result, it was established within the Gibson Custom Shop to pursue unprecedented realism and attention to detail in aging.

Tom Murphy's presence and his artistic creations have played a significant role in Gibson's history, and will continue to be carried on forever as the Murphy Lab.
This instrument is a 1954 Les Paul Gold Top Reissue with "Ultra Light Aged," the lightest of the four aging levels offered. The Les Paul model, born in 1952, has undergone changes in appearance, sound, and playability along with the history of Gibson, but this instrument retains the original P-90 pickups, is equipped with the wraparound bridge that is the most distinctive feature of the '54 model, and is a Japan-exclusive order model that reproduces the rare "All Gold" finish, even on the original.

The basic specifications are based on the latest Historic Spec. The unique tension created by the wraparound bridge, which is the greatest feature of the '54 Les Paul, produces a light yet unrestrained sound, and the musical tone produced by the thick yet expressive nuances of the P90 pickups has an unparalleled charm, making it a model that has gained strong support from serious musicians! This particular instrument was ordered from Japan and features the same neck grip as the '59 LP, which is slightly thinner than the standard '57 LP neck, making it easy for anyone to hold. In addition, while the standard specifications of current historic models use thinner frets, this model uses the same slightly wider fret size as the '59 LP, just like the grip.

We have received the latest model from Gibson Custom Shop, which continues to evolve by returning to its roots. Please enjoy the superb tone unique to Custom Shop products and the powerful aging produced by Murphy Lab!
