Description
Gibson Les Paul models like the one we're introducing here that have been intentionally modified in later years from their original specifications are called "Conversion Les Pauls" and are popular among vintage guitar fans.
The original Les Paul model, released in 1952, underwent numerous specification changes and was produced until it was changed to the SG shape in 1961. Since the original shape was re-released in 1968, various variations and reproduction models have been produced, and as you probably know, it continues to be loved by musicians around the world today.
Les Pauls produced in the 1950s are especially highly prized for their rarity and the quality of their wood. Among these, the humbucking pickup-equipped model from 1958-1960, commonly known as "The Burst," was produced in extremely limited numbers and has skyrocketed in price, making it difficult to obtain.
So, old guitar enthusiasts have discovered a method for pursuing their ideal sound by modifying relatively easily available 1952-1956 Les Pauls (with P-90s and trapeze tailpieces). Because the wood is genuine 1950s wood, it has the potential to produce an extremely appealing sound depending on how it is matched with the pickups and other parts.
This trend, combined with the spread of replacement pickups, the production of replicas by independent workshops, and the emergence of reproduction models, can be said to have been a culture born from the desire for an "authentic sound" since the 1980s.
Our latest arrival is a reproduction model from 1968 onward that has been converted to humbucking pickups. It boasts some very attractive specifications, including a brand logo without an i-dot, a one-piece mahogany neck without a volute, a long tenon set neck, a one-piece mahogany back, and a two-piece maple top. We believe this particular guitar was shipped around 1969.
【body】
The overall weight is approximately 4.5 kg. The body is made of traditional wood materials: a two-piece maple top and a one-piece mahogany back. The original gold top color has been removed and refinished in a faded '50s-style sunburst color. The original P-90 specifications have been converted to a humbucking pickup, giving it a "The Burst" look. The neck pickup cavity features a long tenon and the original gold color. It appears to have been heavily played since the conversion, with paint chipping around the elbows, belt buckle marks on the back of the body, and dents, but it remains in excellent condition, typical of a well-used vintage guitar. The pickguard and pickup rings have been replaced with new ones to accommodate the humbucker change. The bridge has been replaced with a later Gibson ABR-1 (with thicker studs). The control knobs, switch knob, and tailpiece have also been replaced.
【neck】
The neck is a single piece of mahogany with no volute. The fingerboard is rosewood. The headstock shows weather checking around the brand logo, paint chipping around the tuners, wood wear on the top of the headstock, and paint chipping on the back of the neck due to use, giving it the same wonderful feel of a well-used vintage guitar as the body. The tuners have been replaced with older Grover 102s. There's not much variation in winding and they function well. The frets and nut have been replaced once, with little wear and good playability. The nut width is 43.0mm. The neck features a relatively solid, slightly V-shaped profile. The truss rod cover has also been replaced.
[Electrical system]
The controls are the familiar Les Paul model: a 3-way pickup selector, 2 volume controls, and 2 tone controls. The control parts, including the pot, capacitor (Sprague VitaminQ), and output jack, have been replaced. The pickups are currently humbucking, featuring two USA-made PAF clone pickups. The sound, along with the thickness and quick response of the maple top and one-piece mahogany back, is impressive, along with the open, articulate tone typical of PAF clone pickups. The front position produces a sweet, warm, and supple sound, while the rear position produces a crisp tone with a bit of edge and moderate compression. The electronics configuration responds well to volume adjustments, allowing for a wide range of sounds, from clean to crunch to drive, for a vintage-inspired character.
