Description
The most durable HICKORY drumsticks in PROMARK history!
An innovative process for forging the exterior of the sticks in a 3,000°C flame creates the most durable HICKORY drumsticks in PROMARK's history. The FIREGRAIN series uses only the finest, strongest wood, carefully selected through advanced wood selection at our own sawmill. The tempering process also hardens the surface, giving it a unique appearance and enhancing the grain, enhancing the sound's definition and core. It also reduces damage from chips, nicks, and dents, extending the life of the sticks.
And in our weight challenge, we've refined our manufacturing process to ensure consistent weight from pair to pair. While the industry standard for a balanced stick of the same size has been 40 grams, we've allowed a 5 gram tolerance for FIREGRAIN sticks. Your FireGrain sticks will feel nearly identical, no matter where you buy them.

[Promark Staff Interview]
● What led to the creation of FireGrain?
This project began with solving a problem drummers have long sought: how to make hickory sticks more durable without sacrificing playability or natural feel. Traditional methods for increasing stick durability have involved using oak or synthetic materials to increase strength (and durability), but these have come at the expense of playability due to their added weight and stiffness. Regarding weight, we've changed our manufacturing process to ensure consistent weight for each stick pair. While the industry standard for a balanced pair of sticks (within the same size) has been 40 grams, all FireGrain sticks have a 5-gram tolerance. You'll likely find that the sticks you buy at a store will feel nearly identical in weight.
● About the manufacturing process
First, the drumsticks are placed in a flame-treating machine, where each one passes through a flame tunnel heated to over 3,000°C for approximately 8-10 seconds. To ensure the sticks are treated as consistently as possible, the strength and duration of the flame varies slightly depending on the stick size (7A, 5A, 5B, 2B).
● Why does heating the stick increase its durability?
FireGrain is a wood-strengthening technique commonly used in baseball bats, hammers, and axe handles. FireGrain utilizes the same process used to temper arrow and spear tips. Another traditional Japanese technique, known as yakisugi-ban (charred cedar boards), protects wood from UV rays and abrasion, and is widely used in exterior home siding and outdoor furniture. FireGrain's durability is achieved through a process in which the wood's fibers are crystallized by fire, creating an outer armor.
● Does heat treatment affect the weight?
The flame treatment process does not affect the weight of the finished drumsticks. Weight is controlled by the kiln drying process of the logs that form the base of the drumsticks, which is done at PROMARK's state-of-the-art sawmill in Tennessee.
● It feels a little heavy.
○ FireGrain wood is selected and controlled using sophisticated, advanced technology at the PROMARK sawmill to achieve a tolerance of just 5 grams per pair. This selection allows us to identify the optimal range for each stick size. Most drumsticks on the market are selected within a 40 gram weight range within the same size, so you will notice a weight difference even between pairs of the same model. For this reason, FireGrain may feel heavier than regular sticks of the same size.
● Has the sound changed due to heat treatment?
Regarding sound, there have been no official tests comparing the sound of regular hickory drumsticks to FireGrain, but many artists have reported that the frequency range of their audio signals is higher in live and studio situations, making cymbals sound a little brighter.
● Which artists have actually tried FireGrain so far?
○ Used by many artists, including Anderson Paak, Ben Thatcher (Royal Blood), Daru Jones (Jack White, the Ruff Pack), Calvin Rodgers (Ramsey Lewis, R. Kelly, Fred Hammond), and Roy Mayorga (Stone Sour).
● What is FireGrain's future vision?
FireGrain will remain our current model until we develop a new model that serves the market. If there is a continuing demand for a more durable hickory drumstick without the compromises of other woods or synthetic materials, FireGrain will be available to many drummers.
● In the future, the lineup of other models will
○ There are no plans to release any other lineups in 2017. FireGrain currently offers a total of eight models: the Classic 7A, 5A, 5B, and 2B models, and the Select Balance 5A and 5B Rebound and Forward models. This product lineup covers a wide range of players and genres.
●Finally, a message!
If you want the most durable, uniformly matched pair of drum sticks, FireGrain is your best bet. While FireGrain sticks are unique and packed with cutting-edge technology, they don't distract you from the technology; instead, they let you focus on playing. Their goal is to connect with the music. This is what innovation is all about, improving the musical experience for drummers.
