FAQ

Description

OLIVERA turns back the clock to an era when audio effects were still uncharted territory, delivering the vintage, luscious sound of authentic oil can echo. From dark, modulated repeats to sustained textures that approach the sound of classic spring reverb tanks, OLIVERA is the first pedal emulation to capture the mechanical yet wildly organic character of these unusual machines, bringing funky inspiration to any sound.

● What is Oil Can Echo?
The first oil can echo was developed by Tel-Rey in 1959.
The vintage oil can echo device was an electromechanical unit that charged a rotating metal can with static electricity. Instead of tape, it used a small rotating can filled with conductive oil as the dielectric to create the repeats. The resulting delayed signal has a very limited bandwidth, creating a muddy-sounding echo. This innovative approach produces a sound completely different from what you'd hear with a tape machine, instantly transporting the listener to a darker, murkier world of vibes.
Oil can echo units have a record head and two playback heads, but typically no erase head.
This leaves some residual charge as the can rotates, which gives the system two unique properties:
First, it generates playback repeats even when there is no feedback (REGEN) from the playback head. Because electrostatic has its own decay time constant, there will always be echo "repeats" no matter what the setting.
Second, it creates an uneven rhythm in the echo playback rhythm. The first echo occurs at the distance from the record head to the playback head, but subsequent echoes occur at the rotational speed of the system as the dissipated signal returns. The resulting uneven delayed rhythm is a major factor in creating a unique atmosphere, despite the lack of a strong "rhythmic" element.
Adding feedback (REGEN) from the playback head or combining the output of two heads can add to the ambience of the echo.
