~ Murphy Lab ~

Murphy Lab, a new lab located within the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, specializes in guitar aging (a process that recreates the aging look and feel of vintage guitars) using cutting-edge, scientifically-based technology.

Tom Murphy, a founding member of the Gibson Custom Shop and project leader of the Historic Collection, has since developed a technique called aging, which brings a vintage look and feel to new guitars. Backed by his passion and deep knowledge of vintage guitars, Tom's techniques allow him to perfectly replicate the natural lacquer cracks and wear that come with playing a Gibson guitar.

Tom Murphy and Gibson scientifically analyzed the nitrocellulose lacquers of the 1950s and 1960s, which develop cracks known as weatherchecking over time, to unravel the process of change. After extensive testing on prototypes of various models, they developed a lacquer process that reproduces the natural weatherchecking of vintage guitars.

The idea for Murphy Lab was born when Tom Murphy and his team at the Gibson Custom Shop began testing prototypes with various body shapes, finishes and aging levels. As a result, Murphy Lab was established within the Gibson Custom Shop to pursue unprecedented realism and attention to detail in aging.

Tom Murphy and his artistic creations have played an important role in Gibson's history and will continue to live on forever as Murphy Lab.

This is a 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue with "Heavy Aged" finish, the third of four aging levels. The 1959 Les Paul Standard Model shines brightly in the history of electric guitars. Its commanding sound and beautiful body lines captivate countless musicians, making it an iconic instrument coveted by all modern rock guitarists.
After its release in 1951 and its goldtop period, the Les Paul Standard adopted the sunburst finish in 1958 and was produced in that form for a short period until 1960. Among these, the 1959 model, a representative year and one of the most popular, continues to reign as a coveted and sought-after masterpiece.

The Heavy Aged model recreates the peeling finish on the neck and body, as well as belt buckle scratches, that come from hard playing on tours and gigs. It features Murphy Lab's heavily aged hardware. This aged model gives you the feeling of holding an original Burst, showcasing the masterful craftsmanship of Murphy Lab's skilled artisans. It reproduces the realistic finish and weather-checking of a guitar that has been played and loved for years. The fingerboard edge is rolled for excellent grip, adding another layer of appeal to players.

The basic specs are the latest Historic Spec, with unpotted Custombucker Alnico III pickups, an updated assembly, and True Historic parts. The sharp response that follows your picking strokes will have you magically captivated by the Les Paul tone the moment you plug the guitar into your amp!
Not only does it have a great sound projection when the tone is turned down, but the controllable assembly also maintains a moderate brightness even when the volume is turned down, making it a great match for modern use!

The latest models have arrived from Gibson Custom Shop, which continues to evolve by returning to its roots.
Enjoy the amazing tone that only a Custom Shop guitar can offer and the impressive aging process produced by Murphy Lab!
