Description
Description
Murphy Lab, a new lab located within the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, specializes in guitar aging (a process that recreates the aging look and feel of vintage guitars) using the latest scientifically-based technology.
Tom Murphy, a founding member of the Gibson Custom Shop and project leader of the Historic Collection, has since developed a technique called aging, which brings a vintage look and feel to new guitars. Backed by his passion and deep knowledge of vintage guitars, Tom's techniques allow him to perfectly replicate the natural lacquer cracks and wear that come with playing a Gibson guitar.
Tom Murphy and Gibson scientifically analyzed the nitrocellulose lacquers of the 1950s and 1960s, which develop cracks known as weatherchecking over time, to unravel the process of change. After extensive testing on prototypes of various models, they developed a lacquer process that reproduces the natural weatherchecking of vintage guitars.
The idea for Murphy Lab was born when Tom Murphy and his team at the Gibson Custom Shop began testing prototypes with various body shapes, finishes and aging levels. As a result, Murphy Lab was established within the Gibson Custom Shop to pursue unprecedented realism and attention to detail in aging.
Tom Murphy and his artistic creations have played an important role in Gibson's history and will continue to live on forever as Murphy Lab.
This 1958 Les Paul Standard Reissue features "Ultra Light Aged," the least severe aging of the four-level aging process. The "Burst" Les Paul Standard Model is a shining light in the history of electric guitars. Its captivating sound and beautiful, lustrous body lines make it an iconic instrument coveted by all modern rock guitarists. After its release in 1951, the Les Paul Standard went through a goldtop period, then adopted a sunburst finish in 1958, and was produced in that form for a brief period until 1960. While the 1959 Reissue reigned as the flagship model, the 1958 Reissue features a plain maple top for a clean, rugged look. This guitar was custom-ordered in Japan with the same neck grip as the '59LP, slightly thinner than the standard '58LP neck for a more comfortable grip. In addition, while the standard fret size used on current historic models is thinner, this model uses the same slightly wider fret size as the 59LP.
The Ultra Light Aged model features minimal weathering and dents, giving it the natural appearance of aging, as if it had been carefully stored in a case for many years. The fingerboard edges are rolled for excellent grip, a finish that players will appreciate.
The basic specs are the latest Historic Spec. It still features unpotted Custombucker Alnico III pickups, an updated assembly, and True Historic parts. Its sharp response to your picking strokes will have you enthralled with Les Paul tone the moment you plug the guitar into your amp! Not only does it have a great sound when you turn down the volume, but the controllable assembly maintains a moderate brightness even when you turn down the volume, making it a perfect match for modern use.
As for the condition of this particular guitar, it has been aged from the start, so there are some areas that are difficult to distinguish. There are a few small, seemingly new scratches, but no noticeable scratches that detract from the aesthetics or overall feel. The frets are also intact and about 80% of the frets remain, making this a guitar you can use for a long time. The sound and looks are both excellent, and the realistic texture, a product of the involvement of Tom Murphy, a vintage guitar enthusiast, will satisfy even those who actually own vintage guitars. Don't miss this opportunity to consider this pinnacle of Les Paul, available only on the top line!
