High output and impedance matching thanks to the 48V active circuit. High SPL performance. Wide headroom to reduce distortion up to the maximum SPL. Ultra-low residual noise design. Ribbon element unaffected by heat or humidity. High frequency range without phase distortion. Maintains the same sensitivity front and rear. Frequency response unaffected by distance.
The R-122 Live is a tour-grade model of Royer's R-122 active ribbon microphone, perfect for live performance. The R-122 Live's output is comparable to that of a typical condenser microphone, while retaining the warmth and faithful character of a ribbon microphone. Its smooth, natural response effectively suppresses the harsh high frequencies often heard on stage in guitars, brass, and cymbals. Turn up the faders on the PA console and you'll hear the R-122 Live faithfully reproduce your source. The peaky high end that has long plagued house and monitor engineers is no longer a fear.

The fully balanced, discrete head amplifier utilizes a toroidal transformer and ultra-low-noise FETs to deliver high output power of -37dB and high SPL tolerance of 130dB. RF noise interference and signal loss are minimized, even over long cable runs. There's no need to worry about phantom power, cable misconnections, or ribbon element damage from inrush current.

The R-122 Live, with its red logo, features a 4-micron-thick ribbon element (versus 2.5 microns for the R-121), significantly improving the microphone's durability and slightly damping the high-end response. While high frequencies are often cut in the negative direction during live performances, the R-122 Live's smooth texture requires no EQ adjustment.

Figure-8's On Stage
The R-122 Live's bidirectional polar pattern effectively minimizes bleed on stage. Point the side of the microphone toward sounds you don't want to pick up. You should experience minimal bleed. This is the R-122 Live's null (0) point, and the top and bottom of the microphone also pick up very little sound. If the stage monitor is located near the back, slightly reposition the microphone so that the monitor output is at the null point of the R-122 Live. This will remove it from the microphone's pickup area and eliminate bleed.

Patented Offset Ribbon Technology
Royer's patented offset ribbon transducer is a unique design that positions the ribbon element closer to the front of the microphone (logo side). This placement creates space for the ribbon to vibrate within the magnetic field, maintaining a wide frequency response even when recording in high sound pressure (high SPL) environments. It's an essential element of the magic of Royer R Series microphones.

The Sound
Royer microphones sound like your ears. Try them and you'll understand what we mean. If you want to capture exactly what you hear, without excess or lack thereof, get the R-122 Live. The R-122 Live has a flat, balanced response, a fat low end that's never boomy, a defined midrange, and a smooth, natural high end that's never harsh.

Similar to the R-121 Live, the R-122 Live offers faster transient response and a larger transformer, producing crisp highs and tight, defined lows—characteristics that make it an excellent choice for overheads, electric guitar, brass, saxophone, and percussion.

R-122 Live or R-121 Live
Compared to the R-121 Live, the R-122 Live offers quicker transient response and tighter low end, making it the preferred choice for miking overheads and percussion. The R-121 Live is often used with electric guitars and brass, but that's a matter of preference. If you primarily record guitars and brass, we recommend the R-121 Live. The R-122 Live also provides good pickup, but you probably don't need the open high frequencies that its transient performance provides, and the R-122 Live's sensitivity may be too much for high-sound pressure sources. If you primarily use it for overheads and percussion, we recommend the R-122 Live.
