Description
Description
It will be revived through limited reproduction.
The original seeK47 capsule has been faithfully reproduced using the same circuitry and parts. The legend of the FET microphone is here!
Introduced in 1972 as the successor to the legendary U 47 tube microphone, the U 47 fet has become a Neumann classic in its own right. Its smooth yet distinct character shaped the sound of the 70s. After a long hiatus, the U 47 fet has finally been made available again, painstakingly recreated using the same components. A true classic, yet far from outdated.
Smooth is the word that best describes the ideal sound of the '70s. The then-new U 47 fet was certainly part of that sound. Introduced in 1972, the U 47 fet combined the refined sonic balance of its tube predecessor with a newfound transparency and ease of use, making it an instant studio favorite. By the mid-'80s, as records became increasingly intense, the smooth U 47 fet lost favor as a vocal mic and was discontinued. Over the years, however, top engineers discovered new uses for the U 47 fet in front of guitar cabinets and kick drums. Before long, renowned vocalists from boy-group pop to heavy metal re-established the U 47 fet as a versatile vocal mic.
The U 47 fet uses the same K 47 large-diaphragm condenser capsule and the same headgrille design as its legendary tube predecessor, the U 47, which revolutionized the recording and broadcasting industries from 1949 to 1960. To maintain tonal continuity, the U 47 fet also uses an oversized output transformer. Otherwise, its transistorized head amplifier is a surprisingly advanced design and a testament to Neumann's cutting-edge engineering. This "vintage" microphone has a dynamic range of 119 dB.
The U 47 fet can handle extreme SPLs up to 137 dB, or 147 dB with the -10 dB pad switch engaged. This, along with its smooth top end and rich midrange, makes it an ideal microphone for bright, loud instruments like brass and electric guitar. Its exceptionally clear, undisturbed low end is also ideal for upright bass and bass cabinets. Many top engineers consider the U 47 fet the ultimate microphone for placing in front of a kick drum. At the same time, its beautifully balanced response and subtle upper-mid boost for enhanced presence in the mix make it an ideal vocal microphone for crooners and screamers.
The U 47 fet comes with a unique single-sided swivel mount for easy positioning. Pad and low-cut switches are accessible from the rear of the microphone. An additional switch next to the XLR socket attenuates the output signal by 6dB, a useful feature when used with low-headroom vintage preamps.
