The Thumb Bass (Through Neck Model) is one of Warwick's most iconic models, and has been part of their lineup since the very beginning of their custom bass manufacturing. Despite its compact body shape, it delivers a well-balanced sound from low to high frequencies. The use of extremely hard exotic wood for the neck allows for 26 frets despite its long scale, further expanding playing possibilities. The form that fits comfortably against the body also contributes to its high playability, and its highly refined design, which allows for stress-free playing, remains popular even today. This particular instrument is a relatively early production model, manufactured in 1988.
The wenge neck-through construction and hidden bubinga wing, still recognized as standard specifications today, combine to produce clear bass tones and a wide midrange, creating a distinct line that won't get lost in an ensemble. Even with the EQ flat, it produces a very well-balanced and cohesive bass sound. Furthermore, boosting the lows slightly creates a powerful rock tone, while rolling back the mids produces a heavy, slap tone. The EQ is very effective, allowing for a wide range of sound shaping.
Its distinctive, vibrant sound has established a unique character, and it's a model favored by loud music musicians. However, as evidenced by its widespread use by studio musicians in Europe, it's actually an instrument that can excel in a wide range of fields. Furthermore, as mentioned earlier, this particular instrument is a 1988 model, featuring an early type of height-adjustable brass "Just A Nut" with slotted screws, a 2-band EQ, and original EMG J-type pickups. Both the neck and fretboard are made of wenge, it's a 7-piece neck without a volute, and the serial number is engraved on the top of the headstock, offering glimpses of features that are still relevant today.
While there is a missing battery box cover and some signs of wear commensurate with its age, there are no problems with the neck or electronics. Furthermore, the truss rod, which is often a weak point of this era, operates and has no adjustment range, ensuring it will remain fully functional for years to come. Older Warwick models are becoming increasingly rare on the market, so don't miss this opportunity.
