This 60s-style 5-string JB, custom-ordered by our shop, incorporates feedback from players over many years, down to the smallest component values!

Freedom Custom Guitar Research boasts world-class manufacturing techniques and extensive knowledge and experience in guitar mechanics and sound. Trusted by professional musicians, their basses are the ultimate handmade basses that Japan can be proud of, with every step of the process—from carefully selecting the finest materials and seasoning the wood (which most significantly affects neck stability and strength), to precise woodworking, fretting, painting, and final setup—handled by dedicated experts.

This instrument is crafted in the classic alder/rosewood 1960s style, combining a well-seasoned alder body with a maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. This results in an extremely practical instrument that delivers both the thick, soulful sound characteristic of vintage-style JB basses and the durability and stability expected of a professional instrument.

This bass features a custom-made original bridge for 5 strings with spiral saddles and custom-wound pickups manufactured in-house. While strongly influenced by vintage tones, it is meticulously assembled with the balance of a 5-string bass as the top priority. Furthermore, it uses Jescar nickel silver frets instead of stainless steel, has an ultra-thin nitrocellulose lacquer finish, and features specifications unique to our custom-ordered instruments, from the instrument setup to the notches for truss rod adjustment and the values ​​of other parts, resulting in a high-quality instrument that clearly reflects our commitment to tone.

Furthermore, this unit features the original preamp used in the Rhino model (which is now the standard specification for the Retro), aiming for an active yet vintage-feeling sound. While it enhances the sense of volume and body, the tone itself is finished to a natural sound that is an extension of passive. Of course, it also sounds great in passive mode, and you will get excellent results when used in combination with a high-quality tube preamp or amplifier.

While there are a fair number of similar vintage-style 5-string JB models on the market these days, it's rare to find a manufacturer that can so perfectly combine this kind of tone with such excellent intonation and a resonant low B. Many professionals say that once they get used to it, they can't go back to anything else.
