Founded in 1979, Sadowsky Guitars established the "Active JB" style, now adopted by many manufacturers, through modifying instruments for New York studio musicians, including the famous Marcus Miller's '77 JB, and manufacturing instruments under its own brand. It is a brand that has proposed new possibilities for bass sound to the music scene since the 1980s. With a sound variation that can accommodate all musical genres, low noise, and a focus on functionality, Sadowsky instruments have always been with musicians and continue to evolve.
"-Born in New York City, Built in Germany-"
This instrument is a limited edition model from the new Sadowsky's top-of-the-line "Master Built" series, manufactured at the German factory under the supervision of Roger Sadowsky. While inheriting the highly regarded Sadowsky circuit known for its practical sound, it leverages the strengths of the factory, which boasts abundant wood stock and state-of-the-art facilities, to produce high-quality basses in a wide variety of styles. In particular, the "Master Built" series is attractive for its gorgeous finish that rivals even those produced in NYC.
This guitar is a limited edition model, with only 35 units produced worldwide, including both 4-string and 5-string versions. The body top and headstock are made of 5A koa wood, which features a rare flame maple grain. This wood was selected from photographs of various materials shown to us by the Warwick family and Roger Sadowsky during their recent visit to Japan. The body back is made of roasted, chambered swamp ash, and it is crafted with a roasted flame maple neck and black ebony fingerboard, resulting in a truly special custom specification. As this is a 24-fret model, it is equipped with clear, full-bodied soapbar-type humbucker pickups. Combined with the 2-band EQ and tone control, it creates a wide range of sounds. The black chrome pickup covers also add a visual accent.
The roasted body and neck produce a warm, rounded response and a thick, woody tone with a nicely aged, solid core, much like a well-worn instrument. The Masterbuilt series also features a gloss finish, which not only enhances the beauty of the wood grain but also provides a tighter sound with just the right amount of compression. With a tiger stripe wood like this one, the shadows of the grain are even more clearly defined, further enhancing the character of this bass.
This instrument embodies the very definition of magnificent and opulent. When we were introduced to this particular guitar, our offer was for a "fretless" version. This specification, often seen not only in older NYC Sadowsky guitars but also in current German-made models, has garnered a strong following. The thick, rounded sound derived from the soapbar pickups truly shines in a fretless configuration. Another key point is that even when using the bridge pickup alone, the sound doesn't feel thin. As mentioned earlier, this is an extremely rare model, limited to only 35 units worldwide (4-string and 5-string combined), and the fretless version is even more precious. Don't miss this opportunity.
