[Profile of Tomoaki Baba]
Born in Sapporo in 1992, he began playing the saxophone at the age of seven. From 2007 to 2009, he attended the prestigious Berklee five-week summer program as a full scholarship student. In 2010, he was selected to take part in the Berklee Jazz Workshop led by Terri Lyne Carrington. In 2011, he received a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music.
After graduating, he moved to New York and became active as a sideman and leader, performing with artists such as Terence Blanchard, Dana Stevens, Terry Lyne Carrington, Jamie Cullum, Sean Jones and Darren Barrett. He has a passion for combining his music with other art forms, particularly painting, fashion and architecture.
In Japan, he attracted much attention for his brilliant performance as the lead character Miyamoto Dai on tenor saxophone in the 2023 film "BLUE GIANT," and recently appeared in a Uniqlo commercial, where he also composes and performs music. His versatile playing is very appealing, exuding a warm, delicate, and precise yet strong-willed style.
[What is Syos?]
Syos stands for Shape Your Own Sound, which literally means "Create your own sound." The brand name embodies our desire to help players get closer to the sound they desire.
Syos mouthpieces were born in Paris, France in 2016. The concept of Syos mouthpieces was born when Pauline, an expert in wind instrument acoustics, and Maxime, an expert in auditory perception, met.
The internal shape is a crucial element of any mouthpiece. The shape and length of the baffle, the shape and size of the chamber, the mouthpiece opening, the facing curve, and so on. These are all adjusted with a precision of 1/100 mm using a 3D printer. By accumulating these adjustments, the effects of each parameter are studied and digitized. This has enabled us to successfully produce mouthpieces that allow players to obtain the exact sound they desire.
