~ Murphy Lab ~
Murphy Lab, a new lab located within the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, specializes in guitar aging (a process that recreates the aging look and feel of vintage guitars) using the latest scientifically-based technology.
Tom Murphy, a founding member of the Gibson Custom Shop and project leader of the Historic Collection, has since developed a technique called aging, which brings a vintage look and feel to new guitars. Backed by his passion and deep knowledge of vintage guitars, Tom's techniques allow him to perfectly replicate the natural lacquer cracks and wear that come with playing a Gibson guitar.
Tom Murphy and Gibson scientifically analyzed the nitrocellulose lacquers of the 1950s and 1960s, which develop cracks known as weatherchecking over time, to unravel the process of change. After extensive testing on prototypes of various models, they developed a lacquer process that reproduces the natural weatherchecking of vintage guitars.
The idea for Murphy Lab was born when Tom Murphy and his team at the Gibson Custom Shop began testing prototypes with various body shapes, finishes and aging levels. As a result, Murphy Lab was established within the Gibson Custom Shop to pursue unprecedented realism and attention to detail in aging.
Tom Murphy and his artistic creations have played an important role in Gibson's history and will continue to live on forever as Murphy Lab.
This is a 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue that has been given a "Heavy Aged" finish, the third level of aging out of four levels.
The paint peeling and scratches that would have been caused by heavy use on tours are reproduced.
We have a new guitar in stock that features a hand-selected top, similar to the guitar on pages 116-117 of BOTB.
This is a distinctive lemon drop color with reddish areas at the bottom of the control.
In addition, Grover pegs are used to match the actual instrument.
The pickups used are Custom Shop's standard "Custombucker Alnico III."
The open rear pickup creates a clear contrast with the sound of the front pickup, resulting in a crisp rear pickup sound and the warm front pickup sound that is typical of a Les Paul.
Equipped with a newly installed Bumblebee-type paper oil capacitor and a 500k CTS potentiometer with a vintage curve. Compared to a standard 500kΩ potentiometer, the high frequencies aren't cut off as dramatically even when the volume is turned down, allowing you to freely control everything from clean to drive sounds with just a touch of the finger. Distortion is maintained from the 10 to 6 setting, and then smoothly decreases from 6 to 1, allowing for expressive playing depending on the length of the volume control.
