FAQ

Description

In the past, the most exciting thing for guitarists was to increase the gain of their amp. When the amp didn't have enough gain, a treble booster would push the amp.
Let's take a look at two guitarists who used treble boosters to create legendary tones: Brian May (Vox AC30 + treble booster) and Tony Iommi (Laney Super Group + treble booster). While their sounds are completely different, their tone-shaping techniques are nearly identical. Both turned up the gain on their amps and kept the treble booster on all the time. And they only adjusted their tone with the guitar's volume and tone controls.

At Catalinbread, we set out to develop a pedal that combines this beautifully simple structure into a single pedal. We combine an amp-in-a-box with an optimally tuned treble booster circuit. Treble boosters can produce a fantastic tone when used properly, but they are often avoided due to their difficulty in use. By doing this, you can always get the best tone without worrying about balance or getting too loud. Simply connect the pedal and play to relive that sound.
And so Catalinbread Galileo and Sabra Cadabra were born.

There's something special between a Vox AC30 and a treble booster. Hitting an AC30 with a treble booster produces a thumping, booming sound. The midrange produces exquisite distortion, and the harmonics blend beautifully. Turning the guitar volume down further opens up the unique world of Vox amps. It's aggressive and roaring, yet simultaneously bell-like. The Catalinbread Galileo MkII can create that convincing sound.

Brian May's tone has been studied by many players for many years, and the combination of the Dallas Rangemaster and Vox AC30 was the starting point, but it has been said that players without an AC30 or Rangemaster would have a hard time achieving that sound.
The Catalinbread Galileo MkII beats that challenge: this pedal marries the tones of a properly configured Rangemaster and AC30 to deliver a tone that's straight out of Brian May.

The AC30's preamp circuit, with its vacuum tubes replaced by JFETs, is also featured in the Galileo MkII. A perfectly tuned Rangemaster-style circuit then feeds into the preamp circuit. This is the secret to Brian May's tone. The two circuits interact in perfect harmony, resulting in a complex amp tone with a midrange jungle.

For those seeking more Brian May tones
Brian May's tone is not something you can easily achieve by simply connecting a commercially available AC30 and a range master pedal. The Galileo MkII goes a step further in recreating Brian May's tone than many pedals to date, but there are setups that will get you even closer to Brian May's tone.

*From here on, we get into deep territory. This information is not necessary for anyone other than players who absolutely want to produce the exact same sound as Brian May.

First, let's consider Brian May's setup. Brian May uses three AC30s, two of which are used for chorus and two for delay, splitting the signal into three. With this setup, he always keeps the Range Master on to create Queen's epic lead tone. That tone is achieved by combining the Brian May Red Special with Brian May's own picking.

If you have access to the exact same equipment, there's no need to think about it, but even if not, you can get close to the legendary tone with a regular guitar, three clean amps, a Galileo MkII, a device that can split out, and a stereo delay.
