Description
Description
The Modern Eagle reigned as the top model in the Core line in the 2000s, second only to Private Stock. Its basic specs include a Brazilian rosewood neck, fingerboard, and headstock, plus a premium maple body top. Its luxurious materials selection is unmatched by any other brand's regular lineup, and its impressive presence is sure to captivate many, even those who aren't PRS fans!
The body of the ultra-thin satin nitro finish has faded beautifully, giving it a stately look. Furthermore, the difference in color depth between the center and the edges, likely due to the difference in the color and density of the original wood and the way the stain penetrates the wood, creates a very unique impression. It's hard not to appreciate the appeal and depth of using natural materials, even from a different perspective than the exquisite figured model.
The satin finish has an overall shine that is slightly glossier than when it was new, and there are several small dents and picking scratches on the top, sides, and back. The dark abalone color still remaining under the bridge and in the pickup cavity makes it easy to imagine what it looked like when it was first completed.
The body back is also made of high-quality mahogany, and its moderate weight creates a comfortable sense of stability and a rich, expansive tone. The beautiful, three-dimensional cutaway allows for smooth playing in high positions, and the high playability that is unique to PRS, which is hard to believe comes from a set neck joint, is why it is so popular with professional musicians.
The luxurious Brazilian rosewood neck and fingerboard have a polished finish, with only a few minor scratches. The percussive feel is distinct from that of a maple neck, with a thick, dark, and even elegant response that's hard to resist. Once you're hooked, you'll be hooked. While fret wear is evident in some areas, the unified, musical tone of a well-played instrument is a charm unique to a 20-year-old instrument. The different fingerboard colors in the low and high positions are also striking. The included Eagle tag states the initial setup was .009-.042, but the current setup is .010-.046.
The pickups are two legendary "RP" models, a familiar pairing with the Modern Eagle. They offer modest yet powerful mid-to-high mids, delivering a rich, full-bodied sound that's comfortable in both clean and driven tones. Regardless of the pickup position selected, the tone is organic and rich, with excellent separation yet not harsh on the ears, providing a truly impressive presence in real-world situations.
The simple two-humbucker layout allows for coil splitting of each pickup with the push/pull of the tone knob, offering a wealth of sound-shaping possibilities beyond its appearance. The delicate split sound is a perfect match for arpeggios with spatial effects. Furthermore, the volume pot is equipped with a high-pass capacitor, allowing you to combine the volume control with coil splitting to produce a dry sound perfect for funky playing or country licks. This versatile guitar is sure to become a beloved staple, no matter the genre.
While the metal parts show signs of tarnish and wear consistent with its age, the electronics are still in good working order and are in excellent condition for comfortable playability. While minor changes have been made and subsequent models have been released, the original Modern Eagle's cherished presence, combined with its condensed specs and presence, is sure to stand out for PRS fans. Why not take this opportunity to add one to your collection?
