Description

A rare model released in 2020 in a limited edition of 85 pieces worldwide has arrived as a second-hand item on consignment.
This is a masterpiece with an overwhelming presence, with its astonishingly exquisite curly hair.
The guitar is in very good condition, but there is some clouding of the paint on the tip of the headstock (the back side of the guitar on the 1st string side) and weather checking from the body cutaway on the 1st string side and the pickup selector toward the end of the body. There are also some light picking marks near the pickup on the neck side, but they are barely visible depending on the lighting angle. The frets show no wear from use, and the neck is in good condition, so there are no concerns about playability. Don't miss this opportunity to purchase a coveted piece for any PRS fan.

When Paul Reed Smith found a wide curly maple body top in his Private Stock Wood Vault, he knew he should save it for something special: the Paul's 85.

The Paul's 85 is a special edition Private Stock guitar, painstakingly specified by Paul Reed Smith himself and meticulously crafted by the Private Stock team. Paul Reed Smith selected the top and woods, assisted with the neck shape of every guitar, specified the pickups, and played and tuned each guitar until it felt right. The team carried out every detail while Paul tended to the guitar daily.

The wide curly maple top, carefully selected by Paul Reed Smith himself, is paired with an African mahogany back, the neck is made of dark Peruvian mahogany, and the fingerboard and headstock are made of Honduran rosewood with flame maple binding.
The combination of these wood materials was decided by Paul Reed Smith himself.
The inlay that adorns the fingerboard is a solid red abalone bird inlay with a mother-of-pearl outline, giving it a very luxurious finish.

The pickups are TCI, an evolution of the narrow-sized 408 pickups.
This pickup is made using wire produced on the same machine as the 57/08, and is an improved version of the pickup installed in the front of the 408, resulting in a very clear pickup that responds to the player's subtle nuances.
In addition, the special coil tap switches, which are independent for the front and rear, allow you to coil tap while maintaining a sense of power, so you won't feel the thinness of the sound that you get when tapping a regular humbucker.

The bridge is an aluminum PRS stop tail bridge with brass embedded in the area where the strings touch.
By incorporating brass, the high-pitched sounds are enriched without compromising the natural sound, contributing to a sound that is rich in overtones and has good clarity.

Everything PRS knows about guitar making has been poured into this guitar, from the wood drying method, the feel of the neck, the color and stain technique (Electric Tiger Glow: an exquisite stain and spray technique that brings out the beautiful wide-curly maple), the finish (a very special, paper-thin, vintage-formula nitrocellulose that cracks over time), and the pickups (PRS TCI pickups, full, clear, and musical specs).

This Paul's 85 incorporates all of the parts, processes, and craftsmanship I have pursued, tested, refined, and taught throughout my career. I hope this benchmark instrument will be an amazing thing for our company and our industry. What better way to close out our 35th anniversary than with this special, and hopefully magical, guitar? - Paul Reed Smith
