Legendary luthier Carl Thompson, known as the "Stradivarius of the electric bass," has been known for creating instruments for numerous artists, including Bob Cranshaw, Russell George, Ken Smith, Anthony Jackson, Stanley Clarke, and Les Claypool, as well as New York jazz guitarists and session bassists, since founding his brand in 1974.
One of his works is the world's first "piccolo bass," famously used by Stanley Clarke, and it is said that Les Claypool became interested in Thompson's instruments after seeing it.
This instrument features a three-piece mahogany/walnut/mahogany body with a curly maple top, giving it a classic '90s look. It has the familiar 36-inch bolt-on neck, a whale tail, an adjustable wooden bridge, and subtle dot inlays on the back of the headstock. While its appearance may seem simple at first glance, it is dotted with Thompson's iconic features, making it a collectible instrument that deserves to be appreciated not just as a musical instrument, but also as a work of woodworking art.
The pickups were EMG, which were the mainstream at the time, and the pole pieces were single-type 45J. The controls were a passive circuit with two volumes and a tone control, plus an EMG EXB circuit boost control, which was an active control that raised the treble/bass and scooped the middle as the knob was turned up.
In terms of condition, there are some small scratches here and there and it shows signs of some use, but considering its age, there is little damage and it is in excellent condition. The neck, truss rod, and frets are all in good condition, and there are no problems with its functionality at present.
The original tailpiece had a rainbow-style laminated structure, but because of this, the laminated parts were opening up under the pulling force of the strings and were on the verge of breaking, so we had our repair workshop, WSR, create a tailpiece out of a solid block of ebony, eliminating any concerns about its strength. We will also glue and repair the original tailpiece and include it as an accessory, but we recommend the current ebony for its strength.
Even among the rare CT instruments worldwide, this is a rare and collectible instrument.
