[Differences from the 512 series]
Gain range: 512 is +34dB to +65dB
The 312 Mic Pre's circuit board design is based on the 312 Anniversary model. The 312 Mic Pre uses the original AP2516 input transformer. The 512 features an instrument input.

■ Sounds that trace the history of recording
The first microphone preamp designed by API founder Saul Walker was the 312. Its proven reliability and musical characteristics have earned it the trust of many professionals, and it is the foundation of what API is today.

The 312, newly added to the standard production line of the 312 50th Anniversary model, features more modern functionality. The 312 was also used in API recording consoles, and at the time, the preamp circuitry was concentrated at the foot and only a gain pot was implemented on the control surface, but this 312 has been modularized to be compatible with the API 500 series.

To modernize vintage tones, the input transformer is the AP2516, which is also used in the rack model 3124V. Combined with the classic 2520 op-amp, it produces a warm, yet expressive, API tone.

It also has more modern modifications such as a -20dB pad and the ability to tap the output transformer at a 3:1 ratio (-10dB), making it a good match for modern production styles that connect directly to a DAW or audio interface.
