The R-122 mk2 retains the sound of the classic R-122 series with phantom power, but is equipped with a -15dB Pad and Bass Cut Filter.
Royer Labs introduced the world's first active ribbon microphone, the R-122, in 2002. It was a revolutionary advancement in ribbon microphones, featuring an impedance matching circuit that ensured output on par with that of a condenser microphone, allowing ribbon microphones to be used with any preamp, even on very quiet sources.
The R-122 MK2 represents a further evolution of the R-122. Equipped with a -15dB Pad switch and HPF switch, this ribbon microphone offers unparalleled ease of use. Setting the switch to the OFF position completely disconnects the microphone from the signal circuit, so when neither the Pad nor HPF functions are used, the microphone can be used exactly the same as the previous R-122. The switch is recessed into the back of the body to prevent accidental operation.
■R-122 MK2 Features: High output and excellent impedance matching thanks to the 48V active circuit. Ample headroom created by the -15dB Pad switch. HPF switch smoothly reduces low frequencies by 6dB/Oct starting from 100Hz. High SPL performance. Suppresses distortion up to the maximum SPL. Ultra-low residual noise design. Ribbon element unaffected by heat or humidity. Suppresses phase distortion in the high frequency range. Maintains identical sensitivity from front to rear. Frequency response unaffected by mic placement distance.
The Pad
The MK2's new -15dB Pad switch is placed before the electronics, minimizing distortion caused by a lack of headroom when picking up loud sources. Even with a wide, open electric guitar, there's no problem. With the Pad switch engaged, the R-122 MK2's output is only 2dB lower than the R-121's.
The carefully designed Pad switch has no effect on the R-122's sonic quality. Accurate level matching ensures you'll hear the exact same sound with the Pad on or off.
The Bass Cut
The HPF switch effectively attenuates excess low frequencies caused by the proximity effect from 100Hz at 6dB/Oct. The natural and smooth filter is particularly useful for vocals, acoustic instruments, and electric guitars recorded on a microphone.
All of the R-122 MK2's circuits are hand-assembled at the Royer Labs factory in Burbank, California. The use of Royer Labs' original toroidal transformer produces exceptional transient response that sets it apart from traditional ribbon microphones, making it an ideal choice for overheads, percussion, and any acoustic instrument.
Gain
When recording low-volume sources, traditional ribbon microphones require a high-quality, high-gain microphone preamp. The R-122 MK2 offers a significantly higher output level, allowing you to use a ribbon microphone with any preamp, even for quiet, sensitive sources. Equipped with a fully balanced, discrete head amplifier including a toroidal transformer and ultra-low-noise FETs, it delivers an extremely low noise floor, high sensitivity of 37dB, and high SPL capability. Simply connect the R-122 MK2 to your favorite preamp and experience the performance of a Royer microphone, ready to record any instrument or source.
Impedance Matching
The R-122 MK2's ribbon element is always subjected to an optimal load via its active circuitry. It transmits 100% of the R-122mk2's tonal character, regardless of the characteristics of the connected microphone preamp. The low-impedance output eliminates signal loss, even over long cable runs. Furthermore, there's no need to worry about damage to the ribbon element due to phantom power, incorrect cable connections, or inrush current.
Patented Offset Ribbon Technology
Royer's patented offset ribbon transducer is a unique system that positions the ribbon element closer to the front of the microphone (logo side). This placement creates space for the ribbon to vibrate within the magnetic field, maintaining a wide frequency response even when recording in high sound pressure (high SPL) environments. It's an essential element of the magic of Royer R Series microphones.
Recording
The R-122 MK2 features excellent transient response, and its large transformer produces crisp high end and tight, defined low end. It's perfect for overheads, acoustic instruments, percussion, strings, and vocals. Raising the faders on tracks recorded with the R-122 MK2 will give you new insights into your mixdown. Bring the vibrant, realistic sound of your recordings into your mixdown.
Should I use An R-122 MK2 or R-121
Many engineers choose the R-122 MK2 for overheads, acoustic instruments, and vocal recordings, thanks to its sharper transient response and tighter low end than the R-121. The R-121 is often used with electric guitars and brass, but that's a matter of preference. If you primarily record guitars and brass, we recommend the R-121. While the R-122 MK2 can produce excellent recordings, you may not need the open high frequencies that its transient performance provides, and the R-122 MK2's sensitivity may be too much for high-sound pressure sources. If your primary use is with overheads, vocals, piano, acoustic instruments, and strings, we recommend the R-122 MK2.
Two Mics in One
When recording at a distance of around 1 meter, the rear of the R-122 MK2 has a slightly brighter character than the front. We recommend using the rear for sources that require a brighter recording, such as acoustic guitar, vocals, and overheads.
