Description
*Operates with the separately sold PSU-1 (TG CHANNEL dedicated power supply).
Wade Goeke and EMI have reissued the TG12413, a classic guitar that defined the British sound and was instrumental in many of Abbey Road Studios' legendary sessions, including those with The Beatles, between 1966 and 1969. This model celebrates Abbey Road's 75th anniversary and brings back the sounds that The Beatles and Pink Floyd experienced in the control room and captured on vinyl.
EMI/Abbey Road Studios began developing the RS114 vacuum tube limiter using their own technology around 1956, and completed the first RS168 ZENER LIMITER in 1966, followed by the strip type for TG consoles, which could be considered the culmination of their efforts. The original TG LIMITER was developed to reproduce the Limit mode of the Fairchild 660 and the Comp 1 mode of the Altec 436/RS124 in a single unit.
This newly reissued TG12413 ZENER LIMITER combines elements of previous EMI compressors such as the EMI RS168, TG12345 console strip, and TG12414, and was completed after detailed and rigorous sound checks by engineers who are experts on the TG sound, including Peter Cobbin of Abbey Road.
During this development, Wade Goecke incorporated numerous new and powerful features into the ZENER LIMITER, making it possible to flexibly and universally use the best vintage sound of EMI/Abbey Road in modern recording environments. The result is a high-end limiter (compressor) of such power and adaptability to any application that it is hard to imagine there being another more complete product.
Three modes: LIMITER, COMP1 (Fast), and COMP2 (Slow) provide a wide range of functionality suitable for any application.
Input impedance switching function, 300/1200 switching, input circuit +6/+12dB switching. Flexible from soft to hard limiting.
THD mode allows you to add 2% THD (harmonics) to the sound (limiter bypass)
Hardwire Bypass and Stereo Link
Attack - 11 positions, Release - 21 positions, Input & Output - 21 positions. Perfect setting recall.
Professional support from recording studios to mastering

◆NOTE ON FRONT PANEL LABELING
The front panel of this unit features both white and yellow printing. The white printing is identical to the VINTAGE TG12413 unit, while the yellow printing represents features (not available on the original vintage unit) that have been expanded by Wade Goeke and Pete Cobbin of Abbey Road Studios. Users can recall the sounds and settings of the era or try new settings.
◆INPUT GAIN
The ZENER LIMITER allows you to set the input gain and input impedance between HIGH and LOW. The HIGH GAIN setting increases the gain by 12 dB and sets the impedance to 300 ohms. This HIGH GAIN setting produces a sound reminiscent of the RS168 ZENER LIMITER's Vanderlism setting (for more details, see the book "Recording the Beatles"). The LOW GAIN setting is closer to the TG12345 console, with an input impedance of 1200 ohms.
◆INPUT CONTROL
This is a 21-position gold contact rotary switch. It determines the level input to the compressor/limiter circuit. The higher the setting, the stronger the limiting.
◆THD
Enabling the THD mode on each channel turns off the limiter function for that channel. However, the signal still passes through the ZENER LIMITER audio path and sidechain. This allows the signal to retain only the harmonic content (without limiting), a characteristic of the ZENER LIMITER, adding a vintage-style texture to your sound. The smooth harmonic content provided by the discrete amplifier and zener diode limiting circuit can be freely controlled. It can also be combined with the INPUT GAIN switch to create a wide variety of distortion effects.
We also recommend connecting both channels of the ZENER LIMITER (using it as a 1-channel limiter), using the first channel as a limiter and the second channel exclusively for THD control. The output of the first channel controls THD, and the output of the second channel sets the overall level. This creates a very retro sound.
◆OUTPUT GAIN
The 21-position gold contact rotary switch provides +/-10dB of gain control in 1dB steps.
◆COMP/LIMIT
This is a very important switch that determines the tone of the ZENER LIMITER.
COMP1 mode offers a 2:1 ratio and slow attack/release settings, faithfully recreating the mode originally created by EMI engineers to emulate the Altec 436 compressor.
LIMIT mode is a faster setting designed to emulate the response curve of a Fairchild 660.
COMP2 mode is halfway between the two original settings above, with the same compression curve as COMP1 and a faster release time closer to LIMIT mode.
◆SIDECHAIN
The sidechain filter adds great flexibility to the ZENER LIMITER. The sidechain function is particularly useful when the TG limiter is a bit too aggressive, allowing you to adapt to any situation. The sidechain allows you to control the limiting sound by cutting the low-frequency signal (selectable from 30Hz to 300Hz) sent to the limiter's detector circuit. This is extremely useful when you want a gentler compression or limiting effect. Using it on mixes, subgroups, bass, kick drums, etc. will dramatically expand the potential of the TG sound.
◆ATTACK
The combination of the attack control and the sidechain filter mentioned above further enhances the ZENER LIMITER's flexibility. The original EMI 68 and TG versions only had preset attack times. The ZENER LIMITER offers 11 attack time positions, dramatically expanding the range of expression. LIMIT mode features a faster attack time than COMP mode, and when combined with the sidechain filter on drums and bass, it produces a wonderful classic sound.
◆RELEASE
All of EMI's original limiters (RS114 tube limiter, RS124/ALTEC type, RS168 ZENER prototype, TG12345 console limiter, TG12413 mastering limiter) all had the original six sets of release time settings. These were a very important element in shaping the legendary British TG sound, and the ZENER
