About Murphy Lab
Murphy Lab, a new lab located within the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, specializes in guitar aging (a process that recreates the aging look and feel of vintage guitars) using the latest scientifically-based technology.

Tom Murphy, a founding member of the Gibson Custom Shop and project leader of the Historic Collection, has since developed a technique called aging, which brings a vintage look and feel to new guitars. Backed by his passion and deep knowledge of vintage guitars, Tom's techniques allow him to perfectly replicate the natural lacquer cracks and wear that come with playing a Gibson guitar.

Tom Murphy and Gibson scientifically analyzed the nitrocellulose lacquers of the 1950s and 1960s, which develop cracks known as weatherchecking over time, to unravel the process of change. After extensive testing on prototypes of various models, they developed a lacquer process that reproduces the natural weatherchecking of vintage guitars.

The idea for Murphy Lab was born when Tom Murphy and his team at the Gibson Custom Shop began testing prototypes with various body shapes, finishes and aging levels. As a result, Murphy Lab was established within the Gibson Custom Shop to pursue unprecedented realism and attention to detail in aging.

Tom Murphy and his artistic creations have played an important role in Gibson's history and will continue to live on forever as Murphy Lab.

This Les Paul Custom has been given the "Ultra Light Aged" treatment, which is the least severe of the four aging levels. Ultra Light Aged gives the guitar a natural, minimally aged appearance, as if it had been carefully stored in its case for many years, with gentle weather checking and dents. Beyond the aging effect, the guitar is finished in "Heavy Antique White," which recreates the fading that occurs with age, further enhancing its distinctive character.

The maple-topped mahogany body, paired with a jet-black ebony fingerboard and mahogany neck, features a chambered interior, giving it a more manageable weight while maintaining its aesthetic. It's equipped with two highly acclaimed Custombucker pickups, making it a premium model in both looks and sound!

The condition of this particular guitar is such that the strap pins have been replaced with locking pins (the strap pin is missing), there are some new dents throughout the body, and the top coat is peeling, mainly on the headstock and back of the body, making it in player's condition. The frets are still at about 60% of their original height, and there are no issues with the neck, truss rod, or electronics, making this a guitar you can enjoy for years to come.
