Description
Description
The Wunder Audio CM67 S is a full-fledged tube microphone, a workhorse of professional studios, boasting exceptional top and bottom end and the ability to extract natural sound from any source. It's also an excellent vocal microphone for applications requiring a smoother sound, and is ideal for drums (toms, snare, overheads), acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and other applications. The CM67 S is faithful to the vintage U67 while offering modern upgrades. The cardioid mode switching relay is located inside the microphone rather than on the outside of the grille, resulting in a smoother, more full-bodied sound. While the CM67's polar pattern switch is located on the PSU, the actual switch point in the circuit is directly below the capsule compartment. The polar pattern switch combines the eight different polar patterns found in the vintage M49, which are not found on the original 67, into one.
●Capsule
The CM67 S's K67 capsule features a two-piece backplate, with both diaphragms individually tuned and matched for identical response.
There were six different versions of the original Neumann K67 capsule. Early versions, from 1960-66, featured a brass or fiber diaphragm ring. Later versions, from 1966 onwards, featured a white plastic diaphragm ring, which provided better isolation of the diaphragm from the backplate ground. Wunder Audio takes this approach a step further, offering a modern upgrade with the K67 capsule featuring a white porcelain ring. The white porcelain used in the K67 has low magnetic permeability and elasticity, and is strong, hard, resonant, chemically resistant, and heat-resistant. The white plastic ring used in the original K67 would discolor over time and become contaminated with impurities, reducing electrical resistance and causing noise.
●Tube
The CM67 Suprema is equipped with the same German-made NOS (New Old Stock) vintage tube, Telefunken EF86, as the original, which provides excellent performance with this microphone.
Transformer
The CM67 Suprema's transformer, while faithful to the vintage style, has a slightly unique specification: it uses an ingenious feedback network called a tertiary winding, which applies negative feedback to the vacuum tube via the capsule to achieve high-frequency de-emphasis.
This transformer creates a roll-off in the high-frequency response to compensate for the natural high-frequency peak of the original K67 capsule design. To achieve this and still achieve the iconic 67 sound requires a very special transformer. While some U67 reproduction mics take the easy way out, most modifications that attenuate the top end result in less than desirable results. It's not a good trade-off.
Capacitor
True audiophile grade is achieved through optimized passive components. While audiophile grade equipment is typically thought of as the last device in the recording chain, at Wunder Audio we believe it's most important to get the best from the first device in the recording chain: the microphone.
To hear the best recordings, you need to capture your source with minimal noise and distortion, accurately capturing every sonic nuance. Wunder Audio further enhanced this vintage-accurate microphone by utilizing the highest-quality capacitors available today: the Suprema Silver Gold Oil Capacitor. Importantly, tonally, the CM7 S's capacitors stand out for their wonderfully natural vocal quality and exceptional micro-dynamics. (Capacitance: 1uF; Dielectric: Polypropylene; Metallization: 99.99% Silver, 1% Gold; Silver Purity: ≥ 99.97% (typically ≤ 99%); Gold Purity: ≥ 99.97% (typically ≤ 99%). We're talking serious capacitors, on a level that's beyond comparison with other exotics. Providing a richer, thicker, more open, and more spacious impression, the Mundorf Silver Gold Oil Capacitor truly excels at expressing the breadth and depth of a bowling alley's image. There's a slight airiness in the top end that contributes to the sense of spaciousness and fine detail. This condenser is extremely quiet, allowing you to see deep into your recordings. The result is a more open spectrum, enhanced sound staging, increased air and clarity, and a modern-vintage sound without the impression of a lack of low-mid response. You get a tighter, sharper focus, less grain, and a more fluid sound.
Power Supply
This new generation tube microphone power supply, developed exclusively by Wunder Audio, is an upgrade over the vintage tube microphone power supplies used in 1960s Neumann designs. Wunder Audio's upgrade provides clean, stable DC voltage to your microphone and 100% reliable shielding from incoming Wi-Fi and RF interference.
The CM67 S PSU features a two-pole neutral fuse, incorporating the same technology found in premium audio systems. The PSU can be connected to any voltage worldwide without the need for jumper voltage setting switches. Internally, a highly accurate 30-turn trim pot allows fine adjustment of all voltages. Many other power supply designs either lack voltage trim or use single-turn pots that are susceptible to drift. For the most reliable pattern switching, the CM67 S PSU utilizes military-spec Grayhill switches.
Box and Carrying Case
The Wunder Audio CM67 S is packaged in a hinged, straight-grained oak box wrapped in velvet and lined with foam. The velvet-lined, thick-foam tweed case also securely houses the PSU, shock mount, and cables. The tweed carrying case is crafted from Fender tweed, a material often used in vintage guitar cases, enhancing the vintage-style CM67 S microphone. The CM67 S case also features a durable leather handle and a combination lock for secure storage.
◎Includes a dedicated tweed case ◎Domestic warranty: 1 year (3 months for vacuum tubes)
