★A completely new model in the Royer Labs R series, which has become a symbol of the revival of ribbon microphones.

The Royer Labs R-10 is a mono passive ribbon microphone that delivers reliable performance in recording studios and live performances, demanding high quality. Its looks, sound, and SPL performance all live up to the Royer Labs brand name, yet it's also affordable.

The R-10 is manufactured entirely by hand in Burbank, California, USA. In addition to its compact body design, the R-10's unique mounting system allows for flexible microphone placement even in limited spaces.

Like Royer Labs' flagship model, the R-121, the R-10 features an aluminum ribbon element just 2.5 microns thick. Additionally, a custom transformer designed by David Royer maximizes the overload threshold. The rare metal neodymium magnet and Flux-Frame transducer create a powerful magnetic field, achieving ideal characteristics: high sensitivity and low noise. The R-10 also features the same three-layer windscreen and internal shock-mounted transducer system as the R-101.

The R-10's sound has the warm, full-bodied, and extremely natural character that is unique to ribbon microphones, and it is by no means easy to achieve this sound quality at the R-10's price range.

The R-10 delivers everything you need from a Royer microphone in the recording studio or live performance. Capturing the full low end, delivering warmth and power in the midrange, and a smooth character across the entire frequency range, the R-10 excels in applications where ribbon microphones are preferred, such as brass, percussion, drums, and strings.

●R-10 FAQ
Q. Is the R-10 a competing model with other Royer products, such as the R-121?
A. No, the R-10 is an excellent model in terms of cost and is not a competitor to other Royer ribbon microphones. If you have the budget, you may want to consider options such as the R-121, R-122 MKII, or R-122V. The R-10 offers excellent performance at a low cost, and is a part of the established Royer Labs R Series microphones, bearing the R name.
We expect that a certain percentage of users who already own a Royer Labs microphone will purchase the R-10 to expand the range of uses for ribbon microphones.

Q. What is the difference in sound quality between the R-121 and the R-10?
A. The R-121 has a tighter low end and a stronger high end than the R-10. This difference in character comes from the transformer and body shape of the R-10. By using a custom-designed transformer, the output level of the R-10 is 5 dB lower than the R-121, resulting in more headroom. The R-10 is also designed for recording louder, higher SPL sources with ribbon microphones.

Royer Labs ribbon microphones work extremely well with equalizers, so if you feel the high frequencies are lacking, try boosting them aggressively with the equalizer. Try boosting the 12 kHz range on tracks containing acoustic instruments or vocals for a great effect. If you're using the R-10 with an electric guitar cabinet and need a bit more high-frequency clarity, adjusting the EQ can be very effective.

Q. Were there any cost-cutting measures taken in the development and manufacturing of the R-10?
A. No, not at all. Developed based on the R-101, the R-10 has a simpler and more compact structure, allowing for increased production volume and reduced costs. Other factors that helped us achieve the R-10's price include the adoption of custom transformers and changes to the mounting system, but we have not compromised on the high level of manufacturing technology and quality control that the traditional Royer brand is known for.

Only the housing is cast in Asia, while the ribbon attachment and assembly are all carried out at Royer Labs in Burbank, California.

Q. Doesn't the R-10 seem out of place with the Royer Labs brand image, which offers a lineup of high-end microphones?
A. Absolutely not. Royer Labs has established itself as a high-end ribbon microphone manufacturer, and many users own and expect great things from our microphones. With the release of the R-10, we expect demand for Royer microphones from users to continue to grow. Many inexpensive ribbon microphones on the market are not of high quality, and some buyers of those products may be disappointed. However, the affordable R-10 will be an excellent choice for those new to ribbon microphones. We also hope that users who discover the appeal of ribbon microphones through the R-10 will consider the R-121, R-122 MKII, or SF Series as new ribbon microphone options.

In addition to using it in the recording studio, take the R-10 on tour and use it to mic an electric guitar cabinet onstage. This will be a great opportunity to introduce the value of Royer Labs and ribbon microphones to many people.

Q. The R-10 is designed to have a low output level. Do I need to connect it to a high-gain microphone preamp?
A. It has sufficient output level for recording high SPL sources such as electric guitars, brass, and drums. Its sensitivity is 2dB better than the Shure SM57.

*If you have a microphone preamp that can provide sufficient gain to record with better sound quality, try to avoid using devices such as gain boosters that increase the output level through the signal path.If your microphone preamp has low gain and you are recording acoustic guitar or vocals, you can use a gain booster to raise the output to an appropriate level.
