Description
Description
This is a low-pitched whistle in D, machined from metal by Colin Goldie, a long-established German whistle craftsman.
It has a characteristic rustic tone with a slight hint of wind, and allows for the rich expression that is typical of Irish music.
The body is thick, the bore (width of the tube) is slightly wider than whistles from other manufacturers, and the finger holes are also slightly larger, making it possible to produce a loud sound.
It is also possible to play using techniques that require a lot of breath (such as creating rhythm by varying the strength of your breath).
Known to be a favorite of the world-famous Brian Finnegan, this guitar is also known for its excellent response to tonguing and other articulations. It is also used by other renowned players such as Cormac Breatnach, Paddy Keenan, and John McSherry.
[Windway opening (gauge) is 0.94 mm]
Goldie is manufactured with various windway openings (the vertical width of the mouthpiece's airway). The smaller the setting, the narrower the windway, and the larger the setting, the wider the windway.
This model, "0.94mm," belongs to the "Standard:soft blower" category, which has the second widest opening of Goldie's four settings.
This is the standard specification, offering a soft, just-right resistance and a mellow tone. It also offers excellent control over the difficult high range and makes octave jumps easy, making it recommended for those looking for an easy-to-play, low-pitched whistle.
[Colin Goldie whistle instructions]
The white tape wrapped around the tuning slide may deteriorate over time and peel off, but you can rewrap it with new sealing tape at a hardware store (plumbing supplies section). Stretch the tape thinly and wrap it around until it's tight enough. When you insert the head joint, the tape will adhere to itself and slide smoothly.
The inside of the tube will be wet after playing, but there is no need to wipe it off.
If the mouthpiece becomes dirty, the sound it produces may deteriorate, so if this happens, you can wash it by soaking it in hot water and using a mild dishwashing detergent.
