-----
The TLM 103 is one of the most successful products in Neumann's history. Its pure, clear sound is a modern version of the classic U 87. The TLM 103 is a transformerless cardioid condenser microphone with a gentle presence boost, delivering an extremely direct sound with breathtaking clarity and extremely low noise. The TLM 103 is the benchmark by which modern studio microphones are judged. The TLM 103's classic tapered headgrille design gives it an instantly recognizable Neumann look.
The TLM 103 shares the same capsule as the Neumann U 87, the K 67/87, but offers a wide presence boost above 5 kHz, giving it a slightly more modern voicing than the U 87. Its extremely direct yet refined sound makes it ideal for vocals and solo instruments, helping them stand out in the mix effortlessly.
The TLM 103 also sets new standards in technical performance. With an astonishingly low self-noise of 7 dB (A), it is one of the quietest microphones available today. And its sensitivity of 23 mV/Pa ensures ultra-low noise even when used with inexpensive preamps, audio interfaces, and vintage tubes. At the same time, the TLM 103 can handle extremely high sound pressure levels of up to 138 dB without pre-attenuation. Its vast dynamic range of 131 dB captures everything from a whisper to a thunderous bass drum without noise or distortion, making it an extremely user-friendly studio microphone.
Like the rest of the Neumann TLM series, the TLM 103 operates with a transformerless circuit, which minimizes transmission losses and guarantees an extremely direct, uncolored and pristine sound as well as a clear and powerful bass response, even at the highest signal levels.
The TLM 103 is a microphone designed primarily for project studios and broadcasting, but its incredible performance also makes it suitable for speech, vocals, drums, guitar amplifiers, piano, etc. The TLM 103 is also often used as a spot microphone in classical recordings, often for cello and double bass.
