~~~~~The following is the product description for a new item. ~~~~~
Murphy Lab, a new lab located within the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, specializes in guitar aging (a process that recreates the aging look and feel of vintage guitars) using the latest scientifically-based technology.
Tom Murphy, a founding member of the Gibson Custom Shop and project leader of the Historic Collection, has since developed a technique called aging, which brings a vintage look and feel to new guitars. Backed by his passion and deep knowledge of vintage guitars, Tom's techniques allow him to perfectly replicate the natural lacquer cracks and wear that come with playing a Gibson guitar.
Tom Murphy and Gibson scientifically analyzed the nitrocellulose lacquers of the 1950s and 1960s, which develop cracks known as weatherchecking over time, to unravel the process of change. After extensive testing on prototypes of various models, they developed a lacquer process that reproduces the natural weatherchecking of vintage guitars.
The idea for Murphy Lab was born when Tom Murphy and his team at the Gibson Custom Shop began testing prototypes with various body shapes, finishes and aging levels. As a result, Murphy Lab was established within the Gibson Custom Shop to pursue unprecedented realism and attention to detail in aging.
Tom Murphy and his artistic creations have played an important role in Gibson's history and will continue to live on forever as Murphy Lab.
This is a 1968 Les Paul Custom Reissue with "Ultra Light Aged" finish, the least severe aging condition on a four-level aging scale. 1968 marked the return of a legendary Les Paul model, a shining light in guitar history. Alongside the Les Paul Standard, the Les Paul Custom remains a timeless rock icon, beloved by stylish rock guitarists. Many will be searching for this particular model, especially from this period, when the maple body top provided a more vibrant sound.
The Ultra Light Aged model has been carefully stored in a case for many years, naturally displaying the patina of aging with minimal damage, including minor paint peeling, mild weathering, and dents. The fingerboard edges are rolled for excellent grip, a finish that players will appreciate.
The basic specs are the latest Historic Spec. It features dedicated pickups developed for the '68 Les Paul Custom, an updated assembly, True Historic parts, and Kluson 501-VX waffleback tuning machines. Furthermore, the 1968 Les Paul, the first year of re-production, is faithfully reproduced, with the arch, cavity, neck grip, neck heel, and 14-degree head angle all scanned from actual vintage Les Pauls, resulting in a beautiful and imposing guitar.
The latest Gibson Custom Shop guitars have arrived, continuing to evolve by returning to their roots. Enjoy the incredible tone you can only get from a Custom Shop guitar, along with the powerful aging process achieved by Murphy Lab!
