FAQ

Description

ARTHAUS Limited Color is now available in Japan.

The Catalinbread Talisman is a plate reverb emulator with studio-style controls, embodying the spirit of the 70s.
If you ever listen to classic albums recorded in the 1970s, you've probably heard the sound of plate reverb.

Plate reverb is a large-scale reverb effect that uses a massive mechanical mechanism and a metal plate equivalent to that of a king-size bed.
Plate reverb was commonly found in recording studios at the time; for example, all the reverb you can hear in Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" is plate reverb.

Plate reverb is known for its rich, yet not overpowering, reverb sound.
It creates a rich, deep, and magnificent space behind the music.

You might not even notice the reverb effect when simply listening to classic albums from the 70s. It's that natural, yet it still gives you a sense of space.
However, if you listen again carefully, paying attention to the reverb sound, you'll be surprised to find that it has a very deep reverb. In actual recordings, plate reverb signals were sometimes further processed with back filtering and delay.

Plate reverb is an artificial reverberation created by passing a signal through a large metal plate and reading its vibrations.
A basic plate reverb uses a large, thin sheet of metal.
The size of such a plate reverb, for example, the legendary EMT140, is about 1.9m x 0.9m. By passing a signal through the edge of this metal plate, the metal vibrates like a speaker cone.
A pickup is attached to the opposite end to read its vibrations. Then, a mechanical damper stops the metal from vibrating.
This structure adds the smallest possible early reflections to the dry signal, which can be produced by a plate reverb, and from there the warm reverb sound decays.

Plate reverb is mostly used to add a natural depth to recorded sounds.
Although the plate reverb is actually a large piece of equipment measuring 2m x 1m, it was possible to obtain a similar natural reverberation in a space far smaller than a large hall or spacious area.

Plate reverb was used on all sources, including vocals as well as instruments. The early reflections were particularly noticeable on electric guitars, resulting in a very effective tone. The full-bodied, warm reverberation and natural decay completely cover the frequency range of guitars and vocals.

However, in exchange for its superb tone, plate reverb has the drawback of requiring a large size.
Catainbread Talisman has solved that problem and achieved a 479.99% reduction in size!

At Catalinbread, we felt something was off about the sound of plate reverb, which is often included in many reverb pedals. They seemed to focus too much on the "thin metal plate" aspect, resulting in a thin, cheap, and gaudy tone. It was as if someone had flicked a cookie sheet and sampled the sound.

Talisman's goal was to recreate the authentic and legendary EMT140 plate reverb sound. They actually performed maintenance on a real EMT140 at Jackpot! Studios, and the pedal was created with a deep understanding of the original's tone.

Plate reverb is an effect that originated in the studio. Talisman also incorporates elements of studio effects.
The PRE DELAY control allows you to delay the reverb sound by approximately 100ms.

The HIGH PASS control cuts only the low end of the reverb effect, preserving the low end of the original sound and creating a tighter tone.
These controls only affect the reverb sound and do not alter the dry signal.
