Description
This treasured cable, used in top recording studios, is finally available for general sale!
Family Labo's custom-made equipment is based on the know-how they have gained from planning and producing custom guitars, basses, and modified instruments together with Art Tech's Seiichi Sugiura, as well as their experience using Western Electric's historic recording equipment as reference.
Kunihiko Yoshimeki, the representative of Family Labo, who also has a background as a professional bassist, believes that the electric bass is the most difficult of all electric instruments to build and play. Yoshimeki noticed that the quality of the cable determines the transmission of audio signals for this unique electric instrument.
"The tension of electric bass strings exceeds 100kg, giving them characteristics more similar to a grand piano than a guitar. This means that in addition to the musical elements of the instrument you play, there is also a percussive element. With previous cables, it was inevitable that the high frequencies would be muddy and not extend far enough to transfer the energy that is generated over such an unparalleled bandwidth, so it was impossible to give definition to the low frequencies. Despite the volume being loud, the sound was often dull and lacking in resolution. With the arrival of PC Triple C, we believe that for the first time it has become possible to transmit the true sound of an electric bass.
Experience the difference in sound and playing feel that draws out the true potential of the electric bass with our original PC Triple C wiring." (Kunihiko Yoshimeki, CEO of Family Labo)
Basic conductor:
Material PC-Triple CA
0.16mm / 2 types
0.18mm / 1 type Combination of the above
Insulation and sheath:
Double structure of cotton insert, paper material, heat-resistant polyolefin sheath and custom-made metal sheath
plug:
Switchcraft plug
Double Sound Function:
The cable plugs are labeled "Direct" and "Resonate."
Inserting the [Direct] side into your instrument will produce a more straightforward sound, while inserting the [Resonate] side will add a unique resonance and dynamics. For example, you can use [Direct] in an ensemble, or [Resonate] if you want to give the bass a richer presence. By changing the direction to suit the situation, the character of the bass, and the song, you can create a variety of sounds.
*The default settings for bass cables are [Direct] = bass side / [Resonate] = amp side (opposite to guitar).
We also accept custom orders for cable lengths and S/L plug orientations (Direct/Resonate). Please feel free to contact your local store.
◆Family Labo Instrument CablesFamily Labo has been custom-producing and tuning recording equipment for the world's top artists in Paris and around the world. Their sound creation, which has contributed to Grammy Award-winning bands and Europe's top performers, has included highly confidential information and has never been made public until now. In 2024, they launched the collaborative brand SDM & Family Labo (SDM / Family Labo) in Japan with Seigen Ono (Saidera Mastering & Recording) and released cables specialized for mastering work, which led to them publicly sharing their know-how.
1) Custom cable using PC Triple C conductors
All Family Labo cables use the highest quality audio conductors, PC Triple C.
"The energy of musical instruments is vibration, and the electrical energy of electric instruments and equipment is also vibration energy. In fact, wires and cables that carry electricity also vibrate and carry energy, so they are an extension of the instrument. If we look at cables as an extension of the instrument, there have been many different types of cable conductors, which are the material of instruments. And from a technical standpoint, there had been no inventions that could be called new materials until the development of PCOCC. After we completed production of PCOCC in 2013, we made a groundbreaking invention that could be called a major upgrade: PC Triple C conductor. This has become a new material that Japan can be proud of, with an overwhelming difference in performance that divides the world's cables into PC Triple C and other types. We have more than 20 years of experience using various cables made to order PCOCC, and we were able to apply that know-how immediately, so we standardize not only the cables but also the internal wiring of almost all of the equipment and systems we develop with PC Triple C. However, PC Triple C was expensive on the general market and was used almost exclusively in the world of high-fidelity audio. At Family Labo, we ultimately decided to use PC Triple C. "We decided to create PC Triple C instrument cables because we believe that C is a new material that should be used not just for systems used to listen to music at home, but by musicians who create music on the spot," said Yoshimoki, CEO of Family Labo.
2) An approach that views it as an instrument. "Family Labo cables view the natural vibrations created by the movement of energy as the resonance of an instrument in a broad sense, and rather than suppressing that resonance, they amplify and give direction to it. This is the opposite of the idea used by many cables, which are constricted by thick, artificial vinyl materials. Similar to the way that the space between the top and back of an acoustic guitar adds rich resonance, the internal structure is also made up of multiple layers of material, and the shielded conductors are doubly separated by cotton and paper. While the use of solid and stranded wires is a popular topic among cable makers, Family Labo constructs its conductors by selecting and combining multiple conductors with different specifications depending on the cable type. Furthermore, shielded wires, which are often overlooked because they do not pass audio signals, are the element that accounts for the largest portion of the cable's overall mass. Therefore, adding more conductors or changing their structure can significantly change the sound. Each type of plug, attachment method, and attachment material are considered an extension of the guitar parts, and are produced using the same approach as selecting the material and shape of the bridge or nut." (Family Labo) Representative: Mr. Yoshimeki)
3) Double Sound Cable "The effectiveness of Family Labo instrument cables, which were developed with a focus on the musical instrument element of the cable vibrating and amplifying resonance, can be most clearly experienced with guitar and bass cables, whose sound changes depending on the direction they are oriented. While the spring structures of these two cables may appear to be similar, the essential energy of the instruments is different, so the intended effects are different." (Yoshimoki, CEO of Family Labo)
