Description

The ES-345TD was released in 1959 as a variation of the Gibson Thinline model ES-335TD. Despite its slightly quirky specifications, such as stereo operation and a unique tone circuit, it remains a popular model loved by guitarists in a wide range of genres, from blues to rock 'n' roll to progressive.

This time we have a wonderful vintage cherry colored piece that was shipped around 1962.

【body】
The overall weight is approximately 4.1 kg. The body is made of semi-hollow maple. The cherry color has not faded much, but still retains a nice reddish hue. The VariTone control has a gold knob and brass plate. [CUSTOM MADE] The tailpiece studs can be seen below the plate, and the string ground is taken from the bridge studs. There is some weather checking, minor dents, and tarnish on the gold hardware, but while it retains the wonderful atmosphere of an old guitar, it is in fairly good condition considering its age.

【neck】
The neck is made of mahogany. The fingerboard is made of, needless to say, excellent rosewood. There are some dents and weathering around the headstock and neck, but like the body, it is in excellent condition. The tuners function well, although there is some variation in the tightness of the windings. The knob on the 4th-string tuner is chipped. The nut has been replaced once, and although the frets show some wear near the low frets, playability is good. The nut width is 42.5mm. The guitar features a thin neck shape that was unique to this period.

[Electrical system]
The controls are the familiar ES-345 series: 3-way pickup selector, 2 volume controls, 2 tone controls, and 6-way varitone control. We've converted the wiring to a more user-friendly mono setup. The neck (front) position pickup is a humbucker with a "PATENT APPLIED FOR" sticker, and there are no signs of the pickup cover having been removed. The bridge (rear) position pickup retains its original humbucker, although the sticker has unfortunately peeled off. The bridge pickup cover was removed to swap the polarity when the guitar was converted to mono. Any other damaged wiring has been replaced. It's great that the ES-345's appearance is preserved while offering the same ease of use as the ES-335. The rich, crisp tone of the old humbucker is appealing. Enjoy the wonderful old ES sound.
