The winding machines of the time were designed to wind larger coils, and were adjusted to wind smaller coils like those used in guitar pickups. The unique winding patterns were a result of the machine's inherent rotational behavior. This is a mechanical characteristic, and hand-wound reproduction is unavoidable.
